Aug 25th, 2007 by Nathan White
It has been a while since I updated the ‘Weekly Recommendations‘ page of this site. The summer has been very busy, but with the fall I plan to kick things in gear again. (A small podcast is also in the works, but is still a few weeks/months in the future.)
Since I haven’t updated in a while, I decided to post my ‘recommendations’ here as well. This ‘weeks’ update should be fun.
Enjoy!
August 25, 2007:
Quote of the week:
“Remember, the time will come, and perhaps very shortly, when we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; where we must give a solemn and strict account how we have had our conversations in our families, in this world. How will you endure to see your children and servants (who ought to be your joy and crown of rejoicing in the day of Christ Jesus) coming out as swift witnesses against you; cursing the father that begat them, the womb that bare them and the day they ever entered your houses? Think you not the damnation which men must endure for their own sins will be sufficient that they need load themselves with the additional guilt of being accessory to the damnation of others also? Oh, consider this, all ye that forget to serve the Lord in your respective households, lest He pluck you away and there be non to deliver you!” – George Whitefield
Podcast of the week:
- Here are eight lectures by Derek Thomas (Reformed Theological Seminary) on the pastoral theology of John Owen, delivered at the Puritan Reformed Theological Seminary. (Thank you Justin Taylor)
Some Links of the week:
- Did Jesus Abrogate the Sabbath? Matthew 12:1-14 (By the way –of course He didn’t).
- Wow, am I glad my friend Andrew pointed this out. Wow.
- I really enjoyed this article by Tim Challies: Trusting our instruments rather than our sight or instincts. Here is a brief quote: “Rather than trusting in our “instruments,” in the revealed Word of God, we so often trust in our instincts and our internal guidance. Rather than relying on what is given to guide us and what is far more trustworthy, we rely on things that are always changing, always imperfect.”
- Are there really 33,000 Protestant denominations? See James White’s answer.
- John MacArthur was recently on Larry King Live again, and once again, he was brilliant in defending the gospel. If fact, I have never heard MacArthur sound SO MUCH like an Amillennialist
Here is a brief quote: “There’s nothing in Christianity that calls for any kind of dominant power, national power, government power, takeover, war, none at all. This is about a personal relationship with God through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ…the [political] power will never belong to me [or to] those who represent true biblical Christianity because the Kingdom advances one soul at a time through the belief in the Gospel in Jesus Christ.” - This is absolutely hysterical if you are a parent. Timmy, you have no idea…

- Centuri0n over at Team Pyro recently had a very good discussion on Spiritual Gifts (cessationism/non-cessationism). All I can say is ‘amen’. Cent’s candor was very helpful with a topic such as this. The full PDF of the conversation can be found here, and I highly recommend it.
- Everybody is linking to these ‘posters‘ designed by Phil Johnson, but there is no way I can go without mentioning them as well. These are ‘motivational posters’ aimed at spoofing the Emergent Church movement. Ha, Phil certainly has a way with words. Share this one with some friends.
And as a bonus feature:
“Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.”
Daddy doing his best to raise his girl right

That’s really impressive. My 14 year old had some difficulty reading that same book, and it took her a couple of months to get through it. And here your infant is helping you read it, and apparently pulling the trigger on what lines to use the highlighter on. Wow
PS: Great Whitefield quote. Thanks for the Owen audios, they are now on my iPod.
